(Who also Happens to be the Head of Tavistock Books)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Lord and Master of Tavistock Books recently finished his 21st course at Rare Book School in Charlottesville, Virginia, having started this love-affair back in 1998! To know more, read on!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>So, Vic, you&#8217;ve just finished another summer at RBS! How was it?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div>Let&#8217;s start with the word, &#8220;Inauspicious.&#8221; \u00a0Not a word one would normally associate with Rare Book School, at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville [or, to those with some familiarity, C&#8217;Ville]. \u00a0But the word applies this year. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because after flying 5 hours <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_274584599\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Saturday<\/span><\/span> from SFO to IAD, then waiting another 7-1\/2 hours for the regional flight down to C&#8217;Ville [scheduled <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_274584600\"><span class=\"aQJ\">10 pm<\/span><\/span> departure, delayed 3 times], IT WAS CANCELLED BY UNITED AT <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_274584601\"><span class=\"aQJ\">12:30 am<\/span><\/span> that night! \u00a0Can you say <i>Super Shuttle<\/i>? \u00a0The end result- I didn&#8217;t get to sleep till <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_274584602\"><span class=\"aQJ\">3 am<\/span><\/span> that <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_274584603\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sunday<\/span><\/span> morning. \u00a0Yikes, was I a tired puppy that day!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>However, as in most such situations, there was a silver lining. \u00a0Guess who was also waiting for the flight to C&#8217;Ville? \u00a0Terry Belanger, Founding Director of Rare Book School. \u00a0So, at least, during that &#8216;delay&#8217; time Terry &amp; I were able to converse on many divers topics.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And you ask, &#8220;How was it?&#8221; \u00a0 Simply&#8230; \u00a0great. \u00a0I&#8217;ve taken a goodly number of courses [21, since 1998], and all have had aspects of greatness. \u00a0This one, THE HANDWRITING &amp; CULTURE OF EARLY MODERN ENGLISH MANUSCRIPTS, taught by the paleography expert, and very personable, Heather Wolfe, Curator of Manuscripts of the Folger Shakespeare Library, I would rate in my Top Ten.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>How many times have you been to RBS? You hold the record for attendance, no?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Yes, with 21, I&#8217;ve been told I now hold the record for &#8220;Most courses attended&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1882\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1882\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1882\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The beautiful Alderman Library, where, deep down inside you can find dozens of RBS students!\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463-624x832.jpg 624w, http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_0143-e1438119050463.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The beautiful Alderman Library, where, deep down inside you can find dozens of RBS students!<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Why go every year?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A couple reasons&#8230; \u00a0first, RBS is the premier place where one can find week-long subject-specialty courses on the many divers aspects of the &#8216;Rare Book World&#8217;. \u00a0And I believe knowledge is a &#8216;critical success factor&#8217; for those in the antiquarian book trade, so these courses add to my \u00a0knowledge base.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Second, there are few other places where you&#8217;ll find, all at one time, ~ 60 other like-minded folks all not only willing, but eager, to discuss rare books. \u00a0Such not the case in Alameda CA, where on a given day, I&#8217;ll see Steve the Postman &amp; that&#8217;s about it! \u00a0So in C&#8217;Ville, one can&#8217;t help but make bookish friends&#8230; \u00a0I&#8217;m still in touch with folk I met at RBS in 1998, and subsequently.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Third, it&#8217;s just plain fun! \u00a0C&#8217;Ville is a fantastic college town, with some wonderful restaurants, and a goodly number of bookstores. \u00a0What&#8217;s not to like?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>What, in your opinion, was the best thing about the course you took this summer?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The course focused on the English Secretarial hand, a script, for the most part, totally impermeable to me prior to July 20th. \u00a0This not to say I&#8217;m now fully conversant, not by a long shot, but now I have the tools to decipher much of what I&#8217;ll find in front of me. \u00a0The challenge going forward will be to maintain that little progress I made during the week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As to the day-to-day schedule, I haven&#8217;t detailed that here, for Cynthia Gibson did it recently for an ABAA blog post. \u00a0My day-to-day was similar, albeit with a different subject.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Not that it&#8217;s a contest, but could you tell us your favorite course ever taken?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Probably ILLUSTRATIVE PROCESSES, my first course, taught by Terry Belanger, taken back in 1998.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Would you tell every book enthusiast to go to RBS every year?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Well, certainly I advocate it. \u00a0I so much believe in what RBS can provide to an antiquarian bookseller that I established the Tavistock Books Educational scholarship back in 2011 [2012?]. \u00a0For a young bookseller, I&#8217;ll pay the tuition to the RBS course REFERENCE SOURCES FOR RESEARCHING RARE BOOKS, taught by Joel Silver, Directory of the Lilly Library [for those interested, details can be found on the RBS website]. \u00a0So yes, you could say I would tell all to go every year, as I certainly follow my own advice!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>When book-minded people get together, dinners and drinks are common occurrences!
