Whether you are a bookseller, a librarian or even just a customer, it is important to know what you are buying, what you are selling, and what you&#8217;ve got! Reference books are one of the keys to being a responsible cataloguer, no matter your position. We at Tavistock Books boast a collection of over 3,000 reference titles from all walks of the antiquarian book world. Noting proof of what we&#8217;re selling is a top priority for us (as it should also be for you)! Not only do we offer a semi-annual Reference Book Workshop at Tavistock Books in August, but we also offer our library to trusted friends and colleagues anytime they have use of it. And if you collect, or sell, books regarding the far West, it\u2019s indispensable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0<i>Bibliography of American Literature<\/i>. \u00a0Otherwise known as the BAL. \u00a0First volume [Adams to Byrne] issued by the Yale University Press in 1955, compiled &amp; edited by the incomparable bibliographer, Jacob Blanck. \u00a0Final, and 9th volume [Westcott to Wylie], was edited &amp; compiled by Michael Winship, and issued by the Press in 1991, so the 9 volumes almost 40 years in the making. \u00a0It includes all 1sts [plus other stuff, see \u201cInclusions\u201d, volume I], chronologically listed, of the authors included in the set, which were those that died 1930 or earlier. \u00a0All the major names [and many minor names] are included, e.g., Alcott, Clemens, James, et al. \u00a0If you\u2019re going to do pre-1930 American lit, this set a must.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2345\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tavbooks.com\/pages\/books\/32228.1\/charles-1812-1870-dickens-john-c-eckel\/the-first-editions-of-the-writings-of-charles-dickens-and-their-values-a-bibliography\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2345\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2345\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-10.16.50-AM-263x300.png\" alt=\"Our 1st edition copy of Eckel's Bibliography from 1913 is for sale here&gt;\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-10.16.50-AM-263x300.png 263w, http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Screen-Shot-2016-07-06-at-10.16.50-AM.png 481w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our 1st edition copy of Eckel&#8217;s Bibliography from 1913 is for sale <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tavbooks.com\/pages\/books\/32228.1\/charles-1812-1870-dickens-john-c-eckel\/the-first-editions-of-the-writings-of-charles-dickens-and-their-values-a-bibliography\">here&gt;<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>4. \u00a0Eckel. \u00a0T<i>he First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens Their Points and Values<\/i>. \u00a0London: 1932. \u00a02nd Revised Edition. \u00a0As a Dickens specialist, this a \u2018must have\u2019 for me, as it covers all his primary writings, his secondary ones, and loads of other stuff. \u00a0In other words, much\u00a0<i>bang for the buck<\/i>. \u00a0And even though published over 80 years ago, with some data superceded by more recent scholarship, it\u2019s still a relevant bibliography for a general antiquarian bookseller, or Dickens collector. \u00a0For the budget minded, there are many less-costly reprints out there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. \u00a0Baumgarten. \u00a0<i>Price Guide and Bibliographic Checklist for Children\u2019s &amp; Illustrated Books 1880 &#8211; 1970\u00a0<\/i>[2004 Edition, which is the latest I believe]. \u00a0Again, a good \u2018bang for the buck\u2019 reference for the general antiquarian shop and\/or collector of children\u2019s literature. \u00a0Over 18,000 entries, it gives you the data necessary to identify first editions, and while the pricing info is dated, it does give you a starting point with which one can extrapolate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Now keep in mind that these are just the beginning of the pickings! We, as booksellers, use many, many reference books on a <strong><em>daily<\/em><\/strong> basis. And again, if you&#8217;ve ever been curious to know what you&#8217;ve got or how to figure out what you&#8217;ve got&#8230; they are indispensable! That is just one more reason to attend one of our Reference Book Workshops &#8211; where you&#8217;ll get a much broader idea of the important and most well-known reference books, what they cover and how to cite them correctly!
