For the first time in how many years?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Gosh, the last time I remember just shopping the Sacramento Book Fair was the late 80s, before I took the plunge into the bookselling world.\u00a0 I have no doubt that Sacramento was one of the first book fairs at which I ever exhibited [perhaps eclipsed by the now long-time defunct Berkeley Book Fair, a one-day event that started set-up a<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_259146582\"><span class=\"aQJ\">t 6:<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">30 in the am, with an opening o<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_259146583\"><span class=\"aQJ\">f 10\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">am!].<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">These days, the Sacramento event is ably run by Jim Kay, who has done so a number of years now, and he has even turned it into a semi-annual fair, every March &amp; September.\u00a0 Jim tells me there\u2019s been some recent turnover in the bookseller ranks, i.e., other long-time exhibitors besides myself have stepped aside [e.g., Carpe Diem &amp; no Ken Sanders this time], but all the booths looked taken, so there were, no doubt, others waiting in the wings for us to move aside &amp; to take our places.<\/span><br \/>\n<br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">I noted that the Book Lair &amp; ZH Books had moved over into my old spot, which I had shared with Book Hunter\u2019s Holiday.\u00a0 They both seemed to like that corner.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>What were your overall impressions of the fair, from a strictly buyers standpoint? Well put-together, as usual? Crowded?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Jim\u2019s hallmark is indeed a well-run event.\u00a0 The crowd seemed the same, which is to say,<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_259146584\"><span class=\"aQJ\">\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">noon there was a buzz in the hall, and lots of folks in the aisles.\u00a0 Saw plenty of tickets being written.\u00a0 And the snack bar back in the corner continued to put out quality fare\u2026\u00a0 I had the chili this time around-\u00a0 quite tasty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Was there anything you haven&#8217;t noticed before that was called to your attention as a non-exhibitor?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">No, I can\u2019t say that anything comes to mind in this context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">How was the buying? In recent years you have had great luck at Sacramento. Was it the same, after not being able to take first pick at everyone&#8217;s goodies during setup?! (One of the best parts of exhibiting, in our not so humble opinion&#8230; seeing what is available before anyone else!)<\/span><\/strong><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">While I did buy some things that I thought interesting, in terms of potential profit, I see the end results as being modest, at best.\u00a0 In other words, nothing great that would command an exclamatory \u201cWhoohoo, look what I found!\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">It\u2019s hard to say whether or not not being on the floor during set-up occasioned a missed opportunity.\u00a0 I personally didn\u2019t hear of any great finds, but that\u2019s not to say it didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 Certainly such has happened in the past at this fair [even once or twice for yours truly], so who can say?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">What do you think for the future? Will you continue to attend Sacramento as a buyer only or are you considering exhibiting at any upcoming Sacramento fairs?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">I think the Sacramento fair\u2019s immediate future is assured.\u00a0 As I said, Jim does a great job, and the fair is apparently well supported by both the local exhibitors and the local book buyers.\u00a0 As to myself, I confess, a half-day devoted to the fair, vs 4 days\u2026\u00a0 well, let\u2019s just say I loved\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_259146585\"><span class=\"aQJ\">bein<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">g<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_259146586\"><span class=\"aQJ\">\u00a0home by<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">\u00a02 pm Saturday, and being able to catch the last few innings of the Giants game.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Well&#8230; we can all hope that Vic might exhibit at Sacramento again (perhaps when there is no Giants game to be watched)!
