We have had several amazing items on our shelves over the years, as we find these personal and first hand accounts of history absolutely fascinating. What makes a photograph, scrapbook or photo album worth collecting, you may ask? What makes you decide whether or not to invest in one for inventory?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Vic: What I primarily look for is a story being told.\u00a0 That said, most albums are unidentified faces, with few places.\u00a0 If an album is not captioned by the compiler, it makes it difficult to supply context to a potential buyer. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>Q: Is subject matter, provenance or condition the first thing checked by the Tavistock team, followed, I&#8217;m sure, quite quickly by the others?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Vic: All of those are important, though, imo, condition of the album itself not as important as condition of the images.\u00a0 That said, subject matter of primary importance, with provenance coming in immediately behind.\u00a0 Regarding this latter attribute, I\u2019d consider purchasing an album with no captions if it came from a known &amp; documented provenance, especially if said provenance was someone of import, such as, say, a Rochester neighbor of Charles Dickens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>Q: What are the benefits of buying a photograph album, or other piece or personalized ephemera from an antiquarian seller, rather than off eBay or another such site?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Vic: We\u2019ll, I probably buy more from general eBay sellers rather than established antiquarian professionals, for the former category will often go for the quick sale, rather than take the time necessary to properly research the material at hand.\u00a0 An example recently was the acquisition on an archive of family letters &amp; manuscripts from an individual involved in the Texas Convention of 1845 [and subsequent aspects of Texas history].\u00a0 Let\u2019s just say I anticipate a generous profit margin in this acquisition once fully researched &amp; catalogued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3861\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tavbooks.com\/pages\/books\/44995\/photograph-album\/travel-photo-album-california-new-mexico-arizona-kansas-alabama-and-texas\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3861\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3861\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-19-at-2.36.04-PM.png\" alt=\"This family travel photo album dates back to the turn of the century... the 20th century, that is, and focuses on California, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Alabama and Texas. Without giving away any secrets of the trade, can you give us a basic overview of how you go about researching a person who put the scrapbook together? It must take a lot of precious time!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Vic: Therein does lie the rub\u2026 \u00a0much time is involved, and that time needs to be a generous block without interruption.\u00a0 And, of course, one needs the availability of appropriate reference sources.\u00a0 I do subscribe to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ancestry.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">ancestry.com<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newspapers.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">newspapers.com<\/span><\/a>\u00a0&amp; JSTOR [though SFPL].\u00a0 Google, of course, has been a vast help in this arena as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing what information can be noodled out when searching the web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">****<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>Q: In your opinion, what is the most interesting item you have of this nature on the Tavistock shelves at this time, and what about in the past? Feel free to also tell us about something you might not have sold but perhaps have seen at antiquarian book fairs, etc.!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3854\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tavbooks.com\/searchResults.php?category_id=213&amp;action=browse&amp;orderBy=mostrecent\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3854\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3854\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_8903.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG_8903\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_8903.jpeg 639w, http:\/\/blog.tavbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_8903-624x469.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A happy Samm, knee deep in the R15 acquisitions!<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Vic: I\u2019ll defer to Samm on this one, for she recently went through R-15, where all our uncatalogued albums had been stored, \u201cpending cataloguing\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Samm: I spent days going thru this shelf of archives &#8211; some catalogued, some not. \u00a0It was really difficult to sort through it all. But one item I thought was really cool was a photo archive of the New York Railroad and Interurban railways. \u00a0Its HUGE! As we state in the description &#8220;A massive photo album brimming with over 1100 images of street cars, trolleys, motor cars, locomotives, service trains, interurban railway lines, and railroads across New York from the 1890s up to WWII. With neatly handwritten captions, photographer&#8217;s notes often on verso, and even some typed text.\u201d \u00a0The old photos of New York alone are incredible.
