Author Allen Drury was born on September 2nd, 1918, in Houston, Texas. He died on September 2nd, 1998, in San Francisco, exactly 80 years later\u2026 on his own birthday. You could not make that up in a novel without an editor asking you to tone it down (and Drury, of all people, would have appreciated the irony of a plot point too<\/em> tidy to even believe).<\/p>\n\n\n

Allen Drury might have been born in Houston, Texas, but he grew up in Porterville, California, where his family moved when he was young. He went on to earn his B.A. from Stanford University in 1939, graduating right around the time he started a journalism career that eventually led him to writing fiction. Drury spent his early career as a reporter covering the U.S. Senate during World War II, watching Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman up close while everyone else was reading about them secondhand. That front row seat to US politics became the raw material for Advise and Consent<\/em>, published in 1959 – a political novel about a contested cabinet nomination that somehow made Senate procedure feel and read like a thriller! It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1960, spent over one hundred weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and was later even adapted into a film starring Henry Fonda. Not bad for a manuscript one early reader described as arriving in a box that weighed nearly a ton! Drury clearly believed in giving his readers their money’s worth – he was clearly not a man who believed in leaving anything out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drury kept \u201cmining\u201d the Washington well for decades, writing five more novels in the Advise and Consent<\/em> series alone, along with standalone books like Decision<\/em> and Pentagon<\/em>. Later in life he shifted his focus to Stanford, his alma mater, for what became known as his “University” novels. He finished his twentieth (and final) book, Public Men<\/em>, just two weeks before he passed away\u2026 proof that some writers really do intend to work until the very last page. He never married, and from what I can tell he kept his personal life about as private as his political novels were sprawling and dense, happy to hand readers the Senate floor while keeping the rest of the house locked down!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something fitting (or even poetic) about a man whose entire career was spent detailing the insane exactness of the American political system ending up with a birth and death date that line up so exactly\u2026 as if the universe wanted a clean bookend to his life. Drury spent his life turning committee hearings and backroom deals into genuine drama, and made readers care about a cabinet confirmation the way most novelists can only manage for a good murder. If you have never picked up Advise and Consent<\/em>, September 2nd seems like as good a day as any to start. Happy birthday and rest easy, Mr. Drury.<\/p>\n
